The one who renounced

- V Ramesh’s Still Lifes

One of the themes that has occupied V Ramesh is the connectedness of mankind through a oneness of human experience or existence. He constantly questions the physicality of the body and tries to go beneath the skin in order to develop a plural idiom in his art practice. The idea of the sacred runs through his works as a muted melody. This still life series carries a strong emotional resonance and goes beyond the physical objects that are represented as either memento mori or vanitas genres.

The various stations of Ramesh's quest reappear transformed into a fuller experience. The process of painting engaged him over the pandemic period in an intensive yet spontaneous quest to retrace his journey afresh by using watercolours and gouache. Ramesh looks for that transparency of being able to look through the membrane of a vessel and see whole worlds in its interior, almost like the doha of Kabir that invokes the image of transformed worlds in the inner space contained in the water vessel.

Ramesh’s watercolours have that same quality - of allowing the viewer to look through something that is impermeable and instilling or imbuing these images with poetic metaphors. This has been liberating for him as he has succeeded in the grounding of imagery in time and place by reimagining and even creating memory.

Artist V Ramesh was born in Andhra Pradesh in 1958. He received his education in the arts from M S University in Vadodara. He received the Junior Fellowship from the Department of Culture in 1990-93, the Sanskriti Award in 1993, and a Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture in 1995-97.

V Ramesh is among the group of pioneering contemporary artists who were invited to exhibit at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru in 2014. One of his most recent solo shows include Remembrances of Voices Past at the Katzen Arts Center in the American University Museum, Washington which took place in April and May 2015. Along with his career in the arts, he has been teaching in the Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, since 1985.
